If you want the most excitement you should go at night...

The story of your adventure was very interesting. I wouldn't try to do it, because it is scary. I'm one of those Japanese cowards about obake. You seem to enjoy the hiking. It's incredible!
Some day you will regret having disregarded the old ladies' advice...(ha ha!)

Make sure you leave in the morning and come back before night fall. Who knows what danger lurks...
I look forward to seeing the pictures. It sounds like a place of great stillness and beauty.

Good luck finding it again. Sounds like that may be difficult enough.
The computer ate my first comment. Which maybe is a wierd illustration of something else going on here?? Anyway, I don't feel inclined to dismiss history and atmosphere of a place, especially as you describe it. We had a similar experience visiting a pa in New Zealand, the site of a massacre of Maori by the British. The place was definitely eerie and was classified as a sacred place. No lunch-eating allowed. We were alone there. The atmosphere was impressive, daunting.

I have recruited a team. The problem is getting everyone to go before the leech season starts (April). So many people are interested - the foreigners, because it sounds cool, and my Japanese friends, because they`d love to see it but are scared of Obake and think they`ll be safer with a foreigner.

I guess the Obake will shocked to see me or something???

Maybe we`ll go next weekend - if there`s enough time :) I`ll get the camera prepped and keep you posted!

Does a single tree utter a sound when it falls in a forest when there is no-one there to hear it?
It sounds to me like the forest was indeed a place to revere and wonder about, and it definetly deserves respect. It must have been a beautiful place and I wish that I could have seen (and not heard) it with you.

I believe most people can see through illusion and not let it cloud their own udgement, I can anyways. You sure are having a great time over there. In T.O. it is icy cold and our street has nevr been plowed!!!
